As a speaker, my talk aimed to describe and elaborate essential criteria of scientific thinking and its importance in architecture. On this basis, my talks focused on the following topics:
.
What “architect in his/her scientific career” means and its significance in today’s architecture and society (in the country and in the world),
.• Why architecture and society need “problem-centered research mindset”,
• The critical topics in women, politics of gender and equity in architecture and what can be done together, and
.
• The creative potential of digital ecosystem for students and scholars in order to reach out to essential and recent important knowledge sources and experts, in particular during “this unprecedented” time period.
.
Then, they asked their questions about my learning experiences at the Istanbul Technical University-Faculty of Architecture, and my advanced scholarly research experiences at Harvard, Columbia universities and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a former professor in architecture, in my answers, my purpose was to motivate them to test and push their learning and creative thinking limits that they need during their “stay-at-home” due to COVID-19 and health concerns.
.
Surprisingly, I learned that the first MIT Virtual Town Hall was hosted by Rafael Reif, the MIT President in the evening on the same day. (1) As I listened, this virtual community gathering and informative discussion indicated “a new treshold” in teaching, learning, scientific research and scholarship” in this “new normal” time period. Witnessing this (“unprecedented) transition in Cambridge/Boston (as a former visiting scholar from the Institute for two years), I was also very glad to have a chance and opportunity to motivate (architecture) students for their endeavour in learning.
.
Established in 1773, Istanbul Technical University is a pioneering academic institution with its innovative teaching, learning, scientific research studies in engineering and architecture in the country as well as in its region. With its Techno-Science parks, incubation centers, entreprenurship and innovation center and technology transfer office, ITU’s mission is to expand the borders of knowledge and its implementation in science, technology and art for the sake of the sustainable community. Located within its Ayazaga, Macka, Taskisla, Gumussuyu and Tuzla Campuses, it offers teaching and research environment and opportunities with its 2062 academic staffs and 23.331 students as of 2017. (The number of students at the ITU-Faculty of Architecture is 2566 in 2017). (2)
.
With its approx. 7000 members in the country and around the global world, the Istanbul Technical University-Alumni Association was established in 1989 and aims to bring together the ITU-Community and its fellow graduates to establish a mutually beneficial relationship between the university and its alumni in order to collaborate and share knowledge, experiences in science, technology and art.
